One year ago, Groundwork Lawrence cancelled its annual Spicket River Cleanup for the first time in its 18 year history due to the gas explosions that rocked the region just two days prior. This year, the cleanup was back and stronger than ever. Over 530 volunteers gathered early Saturday morning at Manchester Street Park to kick off the annual event, hosted by Groundwork Lawrence in partnership with the cities of Lawrence and Methuen. Lawrence State Legislators visit Groundwork Lawrence Farmers Market (Rumbo News, September 17, 2019)

On Saturday, September 7, state legislators from Lawrence visited Groundwork Lawrence’s farmers market at Lawrence Catholic Academy and saw firsthand the success of the state’s Healthy Incentives Program (HIP). Senator Barry Finegold and Representative Christinia Minicucci took the opportunity to also recognize Groundwork Lawrence for receiving $100,000 from the MassTrails Grant to begin design and permitting of the downtown portion of the Merrimack Riverwalk Path. The Course of the Merrimack: My Time Among the Voyagers (Merrimack Valley Magazine, August 31, 2019)

Early on the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 7, a group of kayakers began its journey down the length of the Merrimack River, starting at the headwaters in Franklin, New Hampshire, where the Pemigewasset meets the Winnipesaukee. It would cover approximately 117 miles, with stops for lunch and events over the four-day course. With the exception of a handful of portages around dams and other obstructions, the Voyagers, as the group called itself, would stay on the river and its banks nearly the entire time. The idea for the trip originated with Northern Essex Community College President Lane Glenn and expanded from a purely recreational adventure into an opportunity to highlight economic and environmental issues related to the Merrimack and the towns and cities of the surrounding valley. Continue Reading
