The Bodwell Orchard is part of the Neighborhood Community Gardens Initiative, currently funded by a state PARC grant to build 4 new community gardens for the 2011 growing season. Once mature, the orchard will provide the community with fresh apples, pears and cherries for decades. The Bodwell Orchard helps recall a time when Lawrence was dominated by orchards and agricultural fields and establishes a strong historic connection to Lawrence's agricultural past, of which the Bodwell Family played a prominent role. The orchard also fulfills a recommendation in the City's recently adopted Open Space and Recreation Plan to plant more trees on the site and supports Lawrence’s Urban Forestry Coalition’s goal of increasing the city’s tree canopy. As a result of strong community support, GWL won this free orchard from The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, supported by Edy's Fruit Bars. The Bodwell Orchard will serve as an educational tool for our students, a source of FREE fresh and healthy fruit for all community members to enjoy, and a model for transforming under-utilized spaces into clean, green and healthy community spaces.
