Please join us in building raised wooden garden beds at the city’s newest park-Manchester Street Park. Situated on a former municipal incinerator site (the Covanta Site) next to Malden Mills/Polartec, the bulk of the park is complete and ready for fun and all that is left is your help in building the beds!
We’re excited to have a few volunteers lined up for Tuesday, July 28 to construct community garden beds at the park site. Home Depot, Reading will be providing some tools and volunteers and through funding from the MA Office of Refugees and Immigrants and the City’s Community Development Department we have funding to buy the materials to build the beds and a compost area.

The community garden was a happy outcome of the community meetings for the Manchester Street Park Design where residents at the meeting said they would love to garden at the park and gardeners would be regular “eyes” on the park. Some residents in the Arlington Neighborhood are currently experienced gardeners and need more healthy space to grow veggies. Due to budget constraints in the bidding, we weren’t able to construct the beds during construction but we have the space secured, prepared and with water-we just need the garden beds to fill it!

Despite the heavy rains for the past month, the first CSA distribution was a grand success! The crates were filled with traditional early summer favorites like peas, lettuce, and radishes as well as some novelty items like garlic scapes! It was fun to see everyone's enthusiasm at picking up their vegetables. Edy, one of our distribution volunteers this year, remarked, "Now I believe it! People who eat vegetables really are happier!"
Thanks for keeping track of us here on the blog-we hope to keep it updated frequently but we are busy here at the office! We recently sent out our Spring Newsletter-if you missed it you can find it here. Today is the first day of our CSA delivery so we're very excited to be bringing another season of Farmer Dave's produce to Lawrence. Manchester Street Park is just nearly complete-check out our Flickr page for images. Also, our Green Team's first day of the summer season was yesterday. Say hi if you see them around town! By the end of this week they will have helped clean up Reviviendo Playground (needed some TLC), visited Lawrence Heritage State Park, visited the Union Crossing Site, cooked a healthy lunch from their CSA share, and weeded their plots in the community gardens. Heather attended the National Vacant Properties Campaign Conference June 1-3 in Louisville, KY.
Lots of great work on site as we start to come into the home stretch. As you can see from this photo and tons more on Flickr the playground equipment is about fully installed. The safety surfacing still needs to be installed around it as well as the final coat of asphalt for the paved areas. The trees and landscaper could be on site very soon as well. The greatest news though is that the City of Lawrence received an additional commitment of funding from the EPA!
In addition to the colorful new park equipment and our turtle and bird friends, there are wild irises blooming along the pond edge as well as what may be marsh marigolds in the pond. What seemed to be a colorless sad site is really changing into something inviting, lush, and vibrant.
