GW Bridgeport is hiring a new Executive Director

The Executive Director works to manage Groundwork Bridgeport as an independent, community-based non-profit corporation. The Executive Director develops and maintains critical partnerships with the city of Bridgeport, local businesses, schools, residents and neighborhoods to build a greener and more livable community. The Executive Director is central to the success of Groundwork Bridgeport, developing projects and programs, building partnerships and securing resources for the future success of the organization.

Planting Lawrence's first Fruit Orchard tomorrow!

What: Groundwork Lawrence will receive a fruit orchard consisting of 19 different varieties of fruit trees! This new orchard will benefit the local community with a space to enjoy fresh fruit. Please join us for the groundbreaking and planting celebration.

The Bodwell Orchard is part of the Neighborhood Community Gardens Initiative, currently funded by a state PARC grant to build 4 new community gardens for the 2011 growing season. Once mature, the orchard will provide the community with fresh apples, pears and cherries for decades.

Final Preparations for the Spicket River Cleanup

GWL is busy preparing for the 9th Annual Spicket River Cleanup happening this Saturday from 9am-1pm. Every year, hundreds of volunteers come together to pull out trash and help make the Spicket River beautiful. Donate some of your time this Saturday and enjoy a delicious lunch with your fellow volunteers after the event at Everett Mills. For more information on this year's cleanup, click here!

An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away in Lawrence: Veggie Prescription Program Highlighted in NY Times

Chances are you've probably heard the saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." These days in Lawrence, this old saying is alive and well...and taking on new meaning. With rates of obesity, Type II diabetes, and heart disease skyrocketing amongst Lawrence's poorest residents, physicians at Greater Lawrence Family Health Center are actually handing over scripts that their patients can fill for fresh fruits and vegetables--and for free--at local farmers markets like the three that Groundwork Lawrence currently manages throughout Lawrence.

Come to the Saturday Farmers Market, at the corner of Park and Lawrence Sts., this Saturday (August 14th) and the next two Saturdays (until August 28th) to enjoy our free concert series. There will be a performance from 12-1 pm on these three Saturdays.

Partner News: Greater Lawrence Boating Community Program to host Tony Lahoud Regatta and Lobsterfest 2010

The Greater Lawrence Boating Community Program would like you and your family to join them for some food and fun in the sun at their end of the season celebration. On August 21st they will hold the 13th annual Tony Lahoud Regatta and then conclude the day with Lobsterfest 2010. So please, if you like the water and you like to eat, join them as they finish the season with a bang.
