The Lawrence Farmers Markets are held from July through October, every Wednesday on Appleton Way in Lawrence’s downtown Essex Street business district and Saturday at the Greater Lawrence Family's Health Center Park Street site. The markets feature a wide variety of local produce, as well as crafts. Since assuming management of the downtown market in 2006, Groundwork Lawrence has sought to increase access to the market for all shoppers by accepting SNAP (food stamps) and credit and debit cards and working to increase the redemption of WIC and Senior Farmers Market coupons. Today, the market provides a lively gathering place for the whole community with free attractions such as live entertainment, family activities and cultural and educational exhibits.

What:

Fresh, healthy, delicious local fruits, vegetables, art, crafts, and more!

When & Where:

Wednesdays at Appleton Way (between Essex and Common Streets, and next to City Hall)
9 am - 2 pm, July 11th to October 31st, 2012

Saturdays at 216 Lawrence Street (parking lot at the corner of Lawrence & Park Streets across from GLFHC) 9 am - 3 pm, July 7th to October 27th, 2012

Because food that's grown close to home is better for you, better for your community, and better for the environment. Get some fresh produce at a great price and connect with other market-goers and with growers!

About SNAP/Food Stamp Benefits at the Lawrence Farmers Market

The Downtown Lawrence Farmers Market, managed by GWL since 2006, started operating a wireless EBT terminal in 2007. It was chosen to host the joint press conference based on its high-ranking SNAP/Food Stamp sales within the state of Massachusetts-which in 2009 alone saw a 180% increase - with GWL's efforts to increase low-income residents' access to fresh, local, and nutritious produce. It is a major focus for not only the Lawrence Farmers Markets, but for all of our community food programs to ensure that healthy, sustainably-produced food is getting into the hands of the low-income Lawrence residents who need it the most as they strive to stem the tide of diet-related disease on a limited budget and to build a healthier community where local farmers and local economy benefit and thrive. We are honored to have been chosen to host the press conference, and thrilled to see Massachusetts take a step closer to increasing equal access to farm-fresh food!
